Short answer

Fatigue is not another word for a single nutrient deficiency. Review sleep, meal regularity, hydration, activity and workload first; persistent fatigue needs assessment for anaemia, thyroid problems, infection, mood and other causes.

What to review first

  1. Separate sleepiness, muscle weakness, breathlessness and low motivation because they lead to different next steps.
  2. Record onset, time-of-day pattern, menstrual changes, recent illness and new medication.

Start with food and daily routines

  • Do not use energy drinks to mask chronic sleep loss.

  • Include protein and fibre-containing carbohydrates at meals rather than long gaps followed by a very large meal.

  • People on vegan diets, with heavy periods or recent blood loss should discuss iron and vitamin B12 testing with a clinician.

When supplements should not be the only response

  • Chest pain, breathing difficulty, fainting or marked palpitations

  • Sudden one-sided weakness, confusion or severe headache

  • Fatigue lasting weeks, unexplained weight change or impaired daily function

Safety and evidence boundaries

Supplements do not replace a balanced diet, diagnosis or treatment. Seek qualified clinical advice when using medication, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, when planning pregnancy, or with chronic illness or known allergies.

Frequently asked questions

Does fatigue mean I need iron?

Do not assume iron deficiency. Excess iron can also be harmful, especially for men and post-menopausal women. Discuss testing when risk factors or persistent fatigue are present.

Will a B-complex provide an immediate energy boost?

B vitamins support normal metabolism, but without deficiency they are not stimulants. Persistent fatigue still needs a cause-based review.
